Sunnyvale Schools Celebrate Walk to School Day
October 2,
2001
Sunnyvale, CA (9/20/01) -- On Tuesday, October 2 students and parents from five Sunnyvale
schools will join hundreds of mayors, city council members, superintendents and
other community leaders from across the country for a walk to school in
celebration of International Walk to School Day. Established by the Partnership
for a Walkable America, Walk to School Day encourages parents to walk to school
with their children in an effort to promote physical activity and pedestrian
safety and to become aware of the difficulties children face on their trip each
day.
Sunnyvale schools participating in the worldwide walking celebration include West Valley Elementary, Cherry Chase Elementary, Cumberland Elementary, Braly Elementary, and Sunnyvale Middle School. Planned in conjunction with the local parent-teacher associations, informational booths will be set up in front of schools at 8:15 a.m. with flyers and other promotional items. Some schools may coordinate group walks, such as Braly Elementary School located at 675 Gail Avenue that is coordinating a “walking school bus” departing from Braly Park at 8:10 a.m.
The first Walk to School Day was launched in 1997 when
Mayor Daley led local officials and school children on a walk to school in
Chicago. Since then, the event has grown considerably. In 2000 there were more
than two million walkers from 9 countries across the globe. This year walkers
from more than 18 countries are expected to participate including the United
States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Cyprus, Sweden, Brazil, Ireland, New
Zealand, Spain, India, France, Denmark, Italy, Chile, Mexico, Germany and
Argentina.
