Sunnyvale Companies Contribute to Relief Effort

Sunnyvale, CA (10/10/01) - Several Sunnyvale-based companies have contributed substantial time and resources to the September 11 relief efforts.  At the September 25 City Council meeting, Sunnyvale recognized Applied Materials, Verity, and Yahoo! for contributions ranging from very sizable cash donations to the creation of a national website to accept relief donations.  Trident Microsystems will be recognized at the October 23 City Council meeting in appreciation for its recent financial contribution.

“These contributions, and countless others, send a strong message that Sunnyvale and Silicon Valley are blessed with a caring community,” said Ernie Bakin, Sunnyvale’s Director of Public Safety.  “It’s a local demonstration of what is happening coast to coast as people stand together in the wake of this terrible tragedy.”

Yahoo! partnered with other corporations to create the American Liberty Partnership website to receive credit card donations for relief agencies.  Verity donated $1 million, and Applied Materials will be donating up to $1.7 million.

Employees of Trident Microsystems, Inc. donated $65,500 via an employee fundraiser organized by the Silicon Valley chapter of the Chinese American Disaster Relief Coalition.  As part of the fundraiser, employees could donate cash or leave time that the company converted to cash.  According to the company’s CEO, Frank Lin, a number of employees with very “ordinary” salaries made contributions in the $1,000-2,000 range, demonstrating remarkable generosity.

Such generosity is consistent with other local fundraisers.  Residents contributed $8,000 at a September 29 fundraiser held by Sunnyvale’s Public Safety officers at the local Farmers’ Market and another $5,000 at a stand-up comedy show held at Rooster T Feathers on September 30.

The companies and fundraisers recognized by the City are just a few examples of corporate and community philanthropy that have come to the City’s attention.  Numerous additional praiseworthy efforts have likely been undertaken throughout the City.
