Sunnyvale Installs High Visibility School Crossing Signs

Sunnyvale, CA (11/6/01) – The City of Sunnyvale is installing new high visibility pedestrian crossing signs at various school crossings within the City.  The new signs, colored “florescent strong yellow-green,” are easier to see than the familiar yellow signs, especially in twilight and overcast conditions.

“State and federal governments have formally approved these signs, so we want to take advantage of their benefits,” said Joe Avila, Traffic Engineer with the Sunnyvale Traffic Engineering Division.

Studies have shown that the florescent strong yellow-green signs significantly reduce the number of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts.  They also greatly increase the percentage of vehicles that stop or slow down.  Public opinion surveys indicate that the signs "stand out" and are associated with the need for caution.(1)

The City hopes these signs will alert motorists to be especially cautious while driving.  Where this sign is posted, drivers are encouraged to carefully watch for pedestrians, school children, bicyclists, and others who may be trying to cross the road.
