Sunnyvale Offers New Services for Community Events

Sunnyvale, CA (11/21/01) -- The City of Sunnyvale has launched three new services to help groups hold successful community events in the City.  Now, just one phone call away, event planners have a “one-stop” community events coordinator who can help identify any relevant permits and provide guidance on planning a safe and well-organized event.  Groups can also apply for grant funding to cover some of their event costs and use the City’s banner spaces, if available, to promote their events.

“Community events are an important way to celebrate our City’s diversity, heritage, and uniqueness,” said City Manager Bob LaSala.  “We hope these new services will encourage community groups to hold more events, bringing the community together and fostering a sense of place in Sunnyvale.”

Groups planning community events are encouraged to contact the City’s Deputy Communications Officer several months prior to their event, if possible.  The Deputy Communications Officer can help determine any City assistance or permits that might be necessary and help make the event planning as smooth as possible.  Groups may be asked to fill out a community events application to assist with the process.

In addition to event planning assistance, a limited amount of grant funding is available via a new community events grant funding program. This year’s grant application period opens on November 26, 2001, and the deadline to submit applications is January 25, 2002.  Applications are available on the City’s website at www.ci.sunnyvale.ca.us/community-events/or by calling (408) 730-7575.  Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis, and preference will be given to events expected to attract at least 500 participants.  To receive funding, admission to the event must be free and open to the public, the event must be held within City limits, and sponsoring organizations must be non-profit.  Additional eligibility requirements are listed in the application.

Groups can also request use of the City’s banner spaces to promote their community events.  Banner space is limited, but groups may request to use the two large banner locations at Wolfe Road and El Camino Real and at the Community Center on Remington Drive if the City is not using the spaces.  Additional banner space will be available in the future.  Groups can contact the City’s Marketing and Special Events Coordinator at (408) 730-7764 to find out eligibility requirements and request banner space.  Eligibility requirements for using the banner space are also posted on the City’s website.

For more information about these new services or to obtain a grant funding application, contact the City’s Deputy Communications Officer at (408) 730-7575 or by email at events @ci.sunnyvale.ca.us or visit the City’s website at www.ci.sunnyvale.ca.us/community-events .
