CITY COUNCIL SELECTS NEW MAYOR AND VICE MAYOR
Sunnyvale, CA (11/26/01) -- The Sunnyvale City Council has
selected Fred Fowler to be mayor for the next twelve months and Julia Miller to
be vice mayor.
Fowler
was first elected to the City Council in 1997 and was reelected to a second
four-year term this year. He served as
vice mayor last year. Prior to joining
the Council, Fowler served on the Sunnyvale Housing and Human Services
Commission and was president of the Lakewood Village Neighborhood
Association. He owns a computer
programming consulting firm in Sunnyvale.
Fowler replaces Jack Walker, whose term as mayor ended this month.
“I’m
looking forward to the opportunity to serve our community in this new role,”
stated Fowler. “I hope to focus on
neighborhoods and neighborhood service delivery,” continued Fowler.
Miller
was first elected to the City Council in 1997 and was reelected to a second
four-year term this year. Prior to joining the Council, Miller served on the
Sunnyvale Housing & Human Services Commission and the Personnel Board. She serves on numerous boards and committees
including the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Board of Directors and Association
of Bay Area Governments Executive Board.
The Sunnyvale City Council selects one of its members to serve a one-year term as mayor and vice mayor, following its rotational policy based on seniority of service. Sunnyvale councilmembers are elected by voters to four-year terms, and they are limited to two consecutive terms by the Sunnyvale City Charter. The next Sunnyvale City Council election will be held in November 2003 when voters will choose four of the seven members.
