Public Invited to Give Input on Recreation Needs Town
Meeting on January 24
Sunnyvale, CA (1/9/02) - The City of Sunnyvale is inviting residents to provide input on recreation needs at a town meeting on January 24. The town meeting is part of a Community Recreation Needs Assessment designed to help the City's Parks and Recreation Department gauge trends and better meet the public's needs. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers at 456 W. Olive Ave.
“The City wants to assess satisfaction with existing
recreation programs, facilities, and services and determine to what extent
residents currently use our programs,” said Robert Walker, Director of the
Parks and Recreation Department. “Most
important, the assessment will identify interest in new programs and services
for the future and help us respond to trends in the leisure services industry.”
In addition to the town meeting on January 24, the City
will hold focus group meetings on January 24 and 25 with targeted
individuals. The focus group meetings
will help identify existing parks and recreation programs and facilities that
are currently used as well as new ones that may be desired. The focus group meetings will take place in
the Sunnyvale Community Center, along with focus group meetings to be held at
the local high schools to gather input from teens.
The Recreation Needs Assessment is being undertaken with assistance from Management Learning Laboratories (MLL), a consulting firm specializing in conducting professional community-wide needs assessments for leisure organizations. Information from the town meeting and the focus groups will be used in developing a questionnaire to be mailed to approximately 4,000 Sunnyvale homes in March, as well as a separate questionnaire geared toward teens that will be distributed in local schools. Parks and Recreation staff will also distribute 1,000 user surveys to participants in Sunnyvale’s programs at various parks, recreation facilities, and classes.
MLL will analyze the survey results and summarize findings in a written report to the City. “By early May 2002, the Parks and Recreation Department will be well-positioned to start working on new directions that may result from the Community Recreation Needs Assessment,” said Walker.
