IT Training Grant Keeps Small Businesses Competitive

Sunnyvale, CA (1/25/02) –  The State of California's Employment Training Panel has awarded NOVA $530,740 to provide technical training for IT workers in Silicon Valley’s small businesses.  The program, known as “Techforce”, will help small businesses stay competitive by better equipping them to compete against larger companies that have higher training budgets and more diversified staff.

"We are truly excited to be part of this groundbreaking program," said NOVA Director Mike Curran.  "In order for small companies to survive in today's economy, the skills of their IT employees need to be competitive with the best.  Unfortunately, small companies often lack the training resources to keep employees' skills on the cutting edge.  The Techforce program will provide that training."

Through the Techforce program, NOVA will enhance the viability of up to 100 small Silicon Valley companies (100 employees or fewer), allowing them to upgrade their IT employees' technical skills.  The Techforce services are available to companies in Cupertino, East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Menlo Park, Milpitas, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Sunnyvale.  The training will primarily take place at community colleges within Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, and will cover a variety of coursework including network management, system administration, internet systems engineering, programming languages, security, and project management.  For more information about Techforce, contact Julee Dinh at (408) 522-1053, or email techforce@novaworks.org.

NOVA is a workforce development organization administered by the City of Sunnyvale.
