a.m.
Sunnyvale, CA (2/21/02) – The Sunnyvale community,
Mayor Fred Fowler, Vice-Mayor Julia Miller, and the City Councilmembers are
hosting a New York City firefighter for a free weekend trip from March 1-3, as
part of a national effort to thank New York’s heroic firefighters and spur
travel and tourism across the country.
The public is invited to join in a pancake breakfast from 8:00 – 11:00
a.m. on Saturday, March 2 at Sunnyvale Fire Station 2, 795 E. Arques Ave.,
located at the corner of Wolfe and Arques.
“Cities across the nation are united in our support
for the people of New York and in protecting our freedom to travel safely,”
said Sunnyvale Mayor Fred Fowler. “I am
honored to welcome a New York hero to Sunnyvale and to show him the best of our
City.”
The public is invited to meet our guest firefighter
at the pancake breakfast. Breakfast
will feature fire engine rides, tower tours, public safety demonstrations, and
booths highlighting City services. For
a suggested donation of $5 for adults and $3 for children, attendees will be
treated to a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, juice, milk, and coffee. For more
information about the pancake breakfast, call (408) 730-7140 or visit Sunnyvale’s website at www.ci.sunnyvale.ca.us/misc/dps/pancake/firehouse-breakfast.htm.
A variety of activities are planned throughout the
weekend for the visiting firefighter including a reception, a City tour,
dinners, a luncheon, and a flag raising ceremony. These activities are being planned and hosted by several
community groups as well as the City.
As many as 300 mayors across the country will host New York City firefighters during the weekend of March 1-3, 2002. The visiting firefighters will lead by example, encouraging all Americans to enjoy our freedom to travel. “Cities Unite America and Thank New York Firefighters” is co-sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and NYC & Company, New York’s convention and visitors bureau. A number of airlines have agreed to donate free airfare for the firefighters.
