Groundbreaking Ceremony April 24, 2002
at 2pm.
On April 24 of 2002 at 2pm
the City of Sunnyvale will break ground on a brand new Senior Center. The new facility will be built at the
Community Center site, 550 E. Remington Drive.
Construction is expected to take approximately one year, so the new
center should be open and ready for business in the spring of 2003!
The New Facility: The new Senior Center will be
a 23,000 square foot, single-story facility located on the knoll closest to the
Manet Drive side of the Community Center.
The facility will boast such features as a beautiful multipurpose room
that will have a stage, an attached patio and a magnificent view overlooking
the pond. The facility will also
include health and counseling facilities, reception and lounging areas, and six
activities rooms for a wide range of senior programs.
ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Where are we now? Currently, the City has
approved construction of the new facility, for a total cost of twelve million
five hundred fifty-five thousand, four hundred and thirty-three dollars
($12,555,433). The contractor is Thompson
Pacific Construction, Inc. of San Rafael.
Will there be more parking? As part of the
overall construction project, the physical layout of the Community Center
parking lot will also change to accommodate better traffic flow through the
entire complex and also to add approximately 119 parking spaces. The Manet
street entrance to the Community Center will be closed during
construction. This may cause some
inconvenience for classes and programs occurring at the Community Center site,
but the City staff will do their best to keep everything well marked and eliminate
as much inconvenience as possible.
What will happen to the trees? The construction of the senior center and the reconfiguration of the parking lots will call for the removal of some trees. Each tree has been considered carefully as part of the overall plan for the Community Center site. Every effort has been made to keep existing healthy trees and enhance the overall landscape effect of the site. While some trees will be removed and some relocated, there will be a net gain of approximately 66 new trees.
