SUNNYVALE ANNOUNCES 2002 ENVIRONMENTAL ACHIEVEMENT WINNERS

Sunnyvale, CA (04/22/02) – Sunnyvale will honor this year's environmental achievement award winners, five businesses and ten youth, at a ceremony at City Hall on April 23 at 7:30 p.m.  Mayor Fred Fowler, who will present the awards for the city, says, “Sunnyvale is unique in the Bay Area because we bring together today’s environmental role models - business winners - with tomorrow’s environmental leaders - youth winners.”  

The Energy Efficiency Award will be presented to Pacific Gas and Electric and Peek Signal Maintenance, Inc. who collaborated with Sunnyvale in replacing traffic signals light emitting diodes (LEDs) in over 3,000 signal lights, reducing electricity demand by more than 50 percent at traffic signals. 

Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company will receive an award in Pollution Prevention for cutting heavy metal discharges in wastewater by more than half compared to last year. 

A Transportation Achievement Award will be presented to Juniper Networks, Inc. for its success in implementing a Transportation Demand Management Program which reached the two-year goal milestones in one year.  The company has been creative and persistent in developing numerous ways for employees to get to work and also received a 2002 Spare the Air Award from the Bay Area Air Quality management District. 

Awards for Waste Reduction and Recycling will be presented to Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).  Lockheed will be awarded for diverting 45 percent of its waste stream during the past year with over 8,000 employees and 40 buildings.  AMD’s California site has diverted over 50 percent or 2.75 million pounds of solid waste from the landfill during the past year.  The company has been recognized by the State of California Waste Reduction Award Program (WRAP) every year since 1995. 

Environmental Achievement Awards for Art were presented to children who entered their artwork depicting, “What I Love About Nature.”  Art awards went to: Patty Boonlue, Polly Boonlue, Stephanie Chieng, Eric Eroles, Brenda Hwang, Anuja Milind Joshi, Daniel Lee, Simon Lee, Sriya Malladi, and Smruthi Sriram.  Artwork will be displayed at the Creative Arts Center Gallery at the Sunnyvale Community Center from May 18 through June 29.
