Sunnyvale Greenbelt Dedication June 10
Sunnyvale, CA (05-29-02) – The City of Sunnyvale will be dedicating and naming the Hetch-Hetchy Greenbelt with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, June 10 from 12 – 12:30 PM at the intersection of Meadowlake Dr. and the Greenbelt, across the street from Lakewood Elementary School in Sunnyvale. The section of the Hetch-Hetchy right-of-way in Sunnyvale will be named the “John W. Christian Greenbelt”, after a former City of Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Director who was instrumental in the vision and implementation of changing the Hetch Hetchy easement from a bare area to a greenbelt with landscaping and amenities. Mr. Christian enthusiastically promoted the greenbelt concept during his tenure with the City from 1988 until his death in 1996.
The Hetch-Hetchy right-of-way in Sunnyvale is a fairly linear piece of land that is 80 feet wide and 2.7 miles long that extends east to west across the city. The land is owned by the City of San Francisco and is leased and maintained by the City of Sunnyvale. It serves as a pedestrian and bicycle greenbelt that links Fairwood Park with Orchard Gardens Park.
“The Greenbelt in Sunnyvale is an excellent example of two agencies, Sunnyvale and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, working together to provide the public with a recreational facility that combines form and function,” said Scott Morton, Sunnyvale Parks Supervisor.
The City has been working on this project since late 1996 when the City Council authorized staff to pursue an open space agreement with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission for development and maintenance of the 2.7 mile trail segment within Sunnyvale city limits.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will be followed by a simple reception with light refreshments.
