CITY COUNCIL SELECTS NEW MAYOR AND VICE MAYOR
Sunnyvale, CA (11/26/02) -- The Sunnyvale City Council has selected Julia Miller to be mayor for the next twelve months and Tim Risch to be vice mayor.
Miller was first elected to the City Council in 1997 and was reelected to a second four-year term in 2001. She served as vice mayor last year. Miller was recently elected vice-president of the League of California Cities Peninsula Division, and serves as a board member of the Santa Clara County Cities Association and the Executive Board of the Association of Bay Area Governments, as well as serving on many other boards and committees. Miller replaces Fred Fowler, whose term as mayor ended this month.
“I plan to help people connect in the community, build new relationships, and continue Sunnyvale’s long tradition of producing results and providing a high level of services for all who call Sunnyvale their home,” Miller stated.
Risch was elected to the City Council in 1999. He serves on a number of boards and committees of the Valley Transportation Authority, the Santa Clara County Cities Association, and the Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority, among others. Risch is a senior software project manager at Therma-Wave Co.
The Sunnyvale City Council selects one of its members to serve a one-year term as mayor and vice mayor, following its rotational policy based on seniority of service. Sunnyvale councilmembers are elected by voters to four-year terms, and they are limited to two consecutive terms by the Sunnyvale City Charter. The next Sunnyvale City Council election will be held in November 2003 when voters will choose four of the seven members.
