Transportation Funding Plan Community Meetings Scheduled

Sunnyvale, CA (12/27/02) -- The City of Sunnyvale is conducting the second in a series of community meetings to gather input on a Transportation Strategic Program, a comprehensive funding program for long-range transportation infrastructure improvements.

A number of major roadway capital improvement projects will be necessary to mitigate increased travel in the City generated by new development over the next 20+ years.  Updated forecasts show that sixteen to nineteen intersections will become congested under various land use forecasts.

Without a source of funds for improvements to the City transportation system, traffic congestion could negatively affect the City's economy, neighborhoods, and environmental health, among other things.  The City’s future funding needs are estimated at approximately $100 million. At this time, a framework for a comprehensive funding program of local funding, combined with outside Federal and State funds, has been developed.

The scheduled community meetings are intended to share information on the City’s long-range transportation infrastructure and funding needs and present in general the proposed approach for transportation funding.  Input gathered from the community will help finalize the strategy for generating funds to provide the necessary transportation infrastructure.

Meetings will be held at the following locations and times:

January 7, 2003 January 8, 2003
9:00 AM 7:00 PM
Sunnyvale Community Center Columbia Middle School, Staff Room
550 East Remington Drive 739 Morse Avenue
