SUBJECT: SANTA CLARA COUNTY CITIES ASSOCIATION DUES

REPORT IN BRIEF

Attached is a copy of the Santa Clara County Cities Association's adopted budget for 1998-1999 and an invoice for Sunnyvale’s dues. Dues remain at $2667 per city. Staff recommends that Council authorize the payment of the dues.

BACKGROUND

The Santa Clara County Cities Association was created in 1990 through a joint powers agreement to develop an effective means to represent the interests of the diverse cities within Santa Clara County. It is governed by a board of directors with one representative from each city. Mayor Roberts is the Sunnyvale representative to the board, and Councilmember Miller is the alternate.

The Cities Association serves as a unified voice for all fifteen cities in the county in their dealings with other agencies, organizations, and levels of government. As the advocate for local cities, it monitors legislative activity in Sacramento and represents the cities on issues of particular concern. The Cities Association coordinates with the Santa Clara County City Selection Committee in order to make appointments to countywide and regional organizations. The Cities Association also functions as a source of education, information, and networking for elected officials.

DISCUSSION

Attached is the budget of the Cities Association for 1998-99. The adopted budget is $47,780 and maintains dues at the rate of $2667 per member city. Approximately half of the budget is for a part-time executive director.
