Sunnyvale's summer aquatics program offers something for everyone: swim lessons, junior lifeguarding, special events, adult classes and recreational swimming for all ages.

Youth Aquatic Activities

Swim Assessments

Not sure what swim lesson level your child should enroll in? Come to a no-charge, five-minute assessment, conducted by the lifeguard on duty. Assessments only available during recreation swim hours (spring/summer) and are not required to sign up for a class.

Wear a swimsuit and goggles (if needed) and bring a towel.

Swim assessments have concluded for the season.

Swim Lessons (6 months to 15 years)

Classes for a range of skill levels are available, including:

  • Parent-and-tot classes for infants and toddlers and their parents or guardians
  • Water safety and basic strokes for beginners
  • Stroke improvement, endurance and survival skills for more advanced swimmers

Swim lessons have concluded for the season and will resume in the spring. 

Junior Lifeguard (13 to 17 years)

Junior Lifeguard Training Class, offered at the beginning of swim season, teaches teens water safety and basic rescue skills.

The training is a prerequisite for the Junior Lifeguard Job Shadow course, where duties include assisting with swim lessons and helping protect swimmers alongside City lifeguards. Job shadow participants:

  • Gain confidence and leadership skills
  • Receive coaching and mentoring from City staff members
  • Earn up to 100 volunteer hours at the pool

Adult Aquatic Activities

Swim Lessons (16+ years)

Instruction is open to swimmers of all skill levels, from beginners to more advanced swimmers.

Lap Swim (18+ years)

Lap swim is available at the Sunnyvale Swim Complex beginning July 13. Appointments are required.

Lifeguard Training (15+ years)

Become a lifeguard this summer with the training and certification in lifeguarding, first aid and CPR needed for the professional rescuer.

Water Fitness (16+ years)

Our aquatic fitness classes offer low-impact workouts for a variety of fitness levels.

Aqua Zumba® - Enjoy Latin dance-inspired moves adapted into a challenging aquatic workout.

Deep Water Exercise - Focus on cardiovascular fitness and endurance with fast-paced, high-energy moves in the deep end of the pool.

Water Exercise - Take part in a fun workout for all fitness levels. Water walkers or joggers welcome.

Note: Teens (13 to 15 years) may register along with a parent or guardian for Aqua Zumba and Water Exercise.

Adult aquatic activities have concluded for the season and will resume in the spring.
