Career Online High School

Looking to expand your career opportunities, re-enter the workforce or continue your education? Apply for a scholarship to earn an accredited high school diploma online, for free through the Sunnyvale Public Library's Career Online High School program.

The Library has partnered with the California State Library and Gale, part of Cengage Learning, to provide a limited number of scholarships to Sunnyvale adult learners.

Do I Qualify?

To be considered for the program, you need to:

  • Be 19 years old or older
  • Have completed at least eighth grade
  • Have a Sunnyvale Public Library card in good standing

Quick Facts

  • You will have 18 months to complete your degree.
  • You may transfer credits from high school courses you have already taken.
  • You will complete all courses online. Courses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Regular access to a computer or tablet with internet access is required.
  • You will also earn a career certificate in one of 10 fields as you work toward your diploma.
  • An online academic coach and a librarian will provide you with guidance and support while you complete the program.

What Do I Need to Be Successful?

  • Competency with technology
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to read, write and speak in English
  • Minimum 10 hours a week for coursework

How Do I Apply?

  1. Begin by taking the online self-assessment. Introduce yourself, describe your previous experience with high school, and explain why this program may be right for you.
  2. A librarian will email you within one week with directions for how to enroll in a prerequisite career course. Once enrolled, you will have two weeks to complete the course.
  3. If you pass the prerequisite course, a librarian will contact you to schedule an interview.
  4. If you pass the interview, you will be required to attend an in-person orientation at Sunnyvale Public Library.
  5. After orientation, you will be invited to commit to the program. The first 30 days are a probationary period.

Scholarships are offered on a first-come, first-qualified basis. Enrollment is limited. You may be placed on a wait list until more scholarships become available.
