Outdoor Service Questions

How do I request materials for pickup?

  1. Using the Library catalog, place items on hold. You may place up to 10 holds.
  2. Library staff generate a report every 2 to 3 hours each business day and retrieve requested items from the shelves if they are available.
  3. We will contact you by email or phone to let you know when an item is ready.
    • You will have up to 10 days to pick up the item.
    • The notification will include the date by which item(s) should be picked up.
    • We send notifications when each item becomes available. If you requested more than one item, you may check the items' status in your account and plan to pick up items together.

How do I pick up materials?

  1. You may pick up requested materials from the Library Plaza (located outdoors just in front of the main public entrance doors) anytime during Express Holds Pickup or Sidewalk Service operating hours:
    • Express Holds Pickup
      • Tuesday, 3 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
      • To use this service, your holds must be ready and you must have called us at 408-730-7309 at least one hour in advance of your arrival.
    • Express Holds Pickup by Appointment
      • To use this service, you must book an appointment and have holds ready.
      • You can pick up items for multiple family members. Include their name(s) and Library card number(s) when making the appointment.
      • Appointments will be in set increments.
      • At the start of your appointment time, staff will place your items on a table in front of the Library doors in a safe, contactless manner.

    • Sidewalk Service (includes Express Holds Pickup)
      • Wednesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
      • No appointment necessary. When you arrive at the Library, let us know that you have been notified your item(s) are ready for pickup. We will verify your account and items ready for pickup.
      • While not required, we recommend that you call 408-730-7309 at least one hour in advance of your arrival.
    • Express Holds Pickup and Sidewalk Service are closed Sundays and Mondays.
  2. We will ask you to wait in a designated pickup area while we locate your items and check them out to you. We will place your item(s) in a paper bag, bring them to a table near the waiting area, and call your name so you can pick them up from the pick up table.

How to do I return materials?

  • You may return materials to the Library anytime.
    • Signs will be posted to indicate where to return materials.
    • No receipt for returned materials is available at this time.

How do I return or borrow Link+ materials?

  • You may return Link+ materials to the Library anytime.
    • Signs will be posted to indicate where to return materials.
  • The Link+ service is currently available for requesting new materials.

How do I get a new library card?

  1. When you arrive at the Library during Sidewalk Service hours, locate staff at the sign "Library Cards."
  2. Provide a photo identification and proof of address.
  3. Staff will issue you a free library card and answer any questions you may have about library use.
  4. If you would like to use the Library's online resources only:
    • Contact us anytime and give us your name, birthday and contact information
    • We will mail you a "Limited Use" card which will provide access to all online resources and limit you to borrowing two physical items at a time.
    • Whenever you wish to borrow more than two physical items, visit the Library and provide photo ID and proof of address and we will remove the restrictions on your card.

What happens to Outdoor Service during poor weather?

The Library will watch the Air Quality Index (AQI) during events impacting air quality. We will close Outdoor Services if the air quality is unsafe.

Do you offer Wi-Fi/Internet access?

While the Library facility is closed to the public, the computers inside the Library are not available for use. However, we have relocated 5 picnic tables from the plaza to the grassy area near the entrance to the Library parking lot on Olive Ave. The Library's Wi-Fi signal is strong in this location, and you are welcome to access the Internet from this location. Additionally, the Library has tripled the number of hotspots available for checkout. You can use the hotspot to connect your device to the Internet for free. The recently added hotspots are expected to start circulating in early July. Reserve a hotspot.

Do you offer computers?

While the Library facility is closed to the public, the computers inside the Library are not available for use. However, we now have a Chromebook and hotspot lending program.

Do you accept donations of materials?

Please check Library Donations Status for the latest information about donations during this time.

Do you offer printing, scanning or copying services?

Not at this time. We are working on a way to print material for pickup in the near future and expect to be able to do so with Sidewalk Service. Scanning and copying will be available in a future phase of reopening.
