Sunnyvale Emergency Response Volunteers (SERV)

The City sponsors and coordinates programs and classes in conjunction with well-trained volunteers to provide supplemental effective disaster response support to the community.

Personal Emergency Preparedness (PEP)

This two-and-a-half hour class will teach you how to prepare yourself, your family, and your home for emergencies and disasters. Registration is required.

  • Classes are held quarterly at the Department of Public Safety or by request for adult groups of 20 or more.

Sunnyvale Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

The City’s CERT program is a seven-week training that will provide you with disaster-preparedness and -response tools and knowledge. The program is open to Sunnyvale residents. We offer three sessions a year. CERT training covers a wide range of emergency preparedness topics, including:

  • Disaster medical operations
  • Search and rescue
  • Fire safety and suppression
  • Using the incident command system
  • Critical stress management

Classes are standardized for the County, so you can take refresher or make-up classes in other cities, like Palo Alto and Santa Clara.

Sunnyvale Neighborhoods Actively Prepare (SNAP)

The SNAP program strengthens disaster readiness within neighborhoods by leading Map Your Neighborhood gatherings where neighbors work together to develop a disaster response plan. SNAP can also assist with other neighborhood preparedness activities.

Sunnyvale Amateur Radio Emergency Services (SARES)

SARES gives amateur radio operators the opportunity to provide backup emergency communication to first responders over two-way radios during disasters.

The Family Radio Service (FRS) is a private, two-way, short-distance communications service using small hand-held radios like walkie-talkies. SARES offers training to teach you how to use personal FRS radios during an emergency.
