Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

During the holiday season, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety is stepping up enforcement with its Holiday Burglary Suppression Detail.

Preventing thieves from victimizing you takes a little teamwork, though. Make sure to protect your valuables while you're out running errands.

Headed out for some shopping? Here are some quick tips to help you defend against holiday grinches looking for crimes of opportunity.

Remember that burglars like easy targets:

  • Don’t leave any purchases in plain view in your car. If you must leave them in your car, hide or cover them.
  • Roll up your windows and lock your doors.
  • Remove portable electronic devices such as smart phones and GPS navigation systems, including suction cups. Be aware that if your phone or laptop is on and in your car, thieves may be able to detect its location.
  • Park in well-lit, heavily populated areas.
  • Trust your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, find another place to park.

If you see someone suspicious lurking around vehicles, call 911 so that Public Safety can respond.

If something is stolen out of your car, as soon as you notice that your car has been broken into:

  • Do not touch or adjust anything in, on, or around the car
  • Call Sunnyvale DPS’s Non-Emergency Dispatch Line: 408-730-7180.

If the crime is in progress, call 911 immediately and do not approach the suspect.

Let's work together to make this a safe holiday season for all: See something suspicious, say something by calling Public Safety.
