Apply: Election Advisory Committee

Apply by Jan. 22 to join a Citizen's Advisory Committee that will help the community take part in a process to change our electoral system for City councilmembers.

Why Change How We Vote for the Council?

Sunnyvale voters currently elect their City councilmembers using an at-large electoral system. Recently, many cities in California have been challenged in court with allegations that their at-large election system violates the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA). For this reason, we are seeking to inform and engage our community on transitioning to an electoral system that meets the requirements of the CVRA, with the goal of sponsoring a ballot measure in 2020.

What the Committee Will Do

To help the community understand and participate in the process leading up to this change, the City is forming a Citizen's Advisory Committee (CAC).

Members will be responsible for:

  • Providing feedback on outreach plans to engage diverse communities,
  • Understanding and communicating potential changes to the electoral system,
  • Serving as ambassadors to encourage resident engagement, and
  • Attending public outreach meetings and three to four CAC meetings between February and December 2019.

The City Council will select up to nine Sunnyvale residents to serve on the CAC. If you are interested in serving in this important role, apply to join the CAC.

Applications are due Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019 at 5 p.m.
