Accessory Dwelling Units: Changes to Regulations

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs – also called granny flats or in-law units) are now allowed on all properties with a single-family home.

State legislation passed in 2019 led to substantial updates to the City’s ADU ordinance. In general, the new regulations:

  • Remove minimum lot size requirements
  • Allow larger-size ADUs
  • Remove the owner-occupancy requirement*
  • Reduce certain setback and parking requirements

* Except for Junior ADUs which are smaller units that share a bathroom with the main residence.

Additional ADU options are available for multi-family properties.
