Apply for Vacant Council Seat

On Dec. 14, the Sunnyvale City Council approved a public process to fill the at-large Council Seat 3 vacancy by appointment. The appointed councilmember will serve until the Jan. 3, 2023 City Council meeting.

Application Process

Submit an Application and Statement of Economic Interests (FPPC Form 700) to the City Clerk’s Office by the application deadline of Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022 at 4 p.m.

General Eligibility

Be 18 years or older when applying.
Be a registered voter in Sunnyvale for at least 30 days prior to being appointed by the City Council.

Next Steps

After confirming the candidates’ eligibility, the City will publish their application materials on this webpage. The City Council is scheduled to conduct interviews of eligible candidates on Monday, Jan. 31 and Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022 beginning at 6 p.m. Interviews will be open to the public.

The City Council is scheduled to make an appointment to Council Seat 3 on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022


At-large Seat 3 is vacant due to former Councilmember Mason Fong’s resignation, effective Nov. 14, 2021. Fong’s term was scheduled to end in 2022. The appointed councilmember will serve out the remainder of the term.
The City is changing to a district-based election system and Seat 3 is one of the three remaining at-large seats. At-large Seats 1, 3 and 5 will change to district-based seats in the Nov. 8, 2022 general election.
