Many trees in Sunnyvale require a specific type of permit to remove depending on where they are located. Before removing a tree, you need to know whether it is a street tree or a private tree.
Some private trees are protected and require a permit to be removed. To determine if a tree is protected, measure its circumference from 4 1/2 feet above ground:
Call the Street Trees Program in the Parks Division: 408-730-7506, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For emergencies after business hours: 408-730-7180.
Only trees that are dead, dying, damaged or present a hazard will be removed by the City. Property owners can apply to have their street tree removed and replaced at their expense.
The City has created a special program with annual removal limits to replace liquidambar street trees, which produce hard, round, spiny seedpods known to create tripping hazards. You will need to apply to the program, which is first-come, first-served.
Special Fiscal Year 2020/21 and 2021/22 Notice: We are currently not accepting applications. The Liquidambar Removal Program is not funded for FY2020/21 or FY2021/22. This is due to budget cuts resulting from COVID-19. You may apply to remove the liquidambar tree using your own funds. To do so, submit the Street Tree Work Permit Application above.
If a stump remains longer than 90 days after the City has removed a tree, call 408-730-7506.
