The Environmental Services Department is responsible for managing the City’s environmental utility services and working with the community to protect the environment. The department accomplishes this through: the operations and maintenance of the City’s potable and recycled water systems and the sanitary and storm sewer systems; the treatment of wastewater at the City’s Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP); the collection of garbage and recyclables from City residents and businesses; the diversion of recyclables through the operation of the Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer Station (SMaRT Station®); and ensuring that the City complies with all applicable regulatory requirements.
The department also leads coordination of the City’s sustainability initiatives as outlined in the Climate Action Playbook.
The department consists of the following Divisions: Water and Sewer; Water Pollution Control Plant; Solid Waste Management; and Regulatory Compliance and Sustainability.
